Wind It Up, Yarn Winder
On the left is the device used, the yarn winder. The right image features a woman holding yarn after being processed through the yarn winder.
Creating fabric from the raw product to a completed good takes a substantial amount of work. From collecting it from an animal or a plant to the creation of cloth, many steps take place.
In this week鈥檚 What鈥檚 New Wednesday, we explore one of the steps: winding the yarn via a yarn winder. After the fiber was spun into yarn, it was often spun into skeins, or loose coils. Skeins, depending on the type and weight of the yarn, run about 360 feet. The yarn winder does just what the name implies. The wide end pieces of the windmill-like spinner hold the yarn as it goes around. The result is an organized coil or loop, like the woman holds in the photograph. By winding it up, the yarn is neat and ready to use.
