Homemade Hand Tool
This tool, a drawknife, assists with woodworking. Made up of a blade and two wooden handles, this homemade drawknife has a 9 inch blade. It is used to shape wood and remove wood shavings. Often it was used to remove large chunks of wood for a faceted look, remove bark and create rough, rounded edges. To use it, the woodworker sits at and straddles a special bench called a shaving horse. The drawknife, held in both hands, is pulled or “drawn” back toward the woodworker, removing the wood as it slices through. It can create concave or convex curves. The drawknife comes in a variety of sizes, the largest of which removes the bark from logs to the smallest for carving. This homemade hand tool proved very useful in the woodworker’s toolbox.
