Pretty Weller Pottery
Ladies from all walks of life took pride in having an attractive table. Often, pretty and functional worked hand-in-hand. Candles were used as light and needed a holder. This week’s What’s New Wednesday investigates a Weller Pottery candle holder.
Weller Pottery, established by 21-year-old Samuel A. Weller in 1872, started as a cottage industry. Originally in Fultonham, Ohio, Weller worked out of a small cabin producing vases, flowerpots, crocks and similar products. Ever the entrepreneur, he moved his operations to Zanesville, Ohio, between 1882-1890. Weller Pottery became the largest mass producer of art-based pottery in 1905. Weller worked with many artists and designers, and in turn developed many lines and some unique means of decorating the pottery. Weller died in 1925. Weller Pottery went through many leadership changes. By 1948, Weller Pottery disbanded. However, from 1872-1948 Weller Potter had the definition of pretty pottery.
