Sewing – a Team Event
South Dakota's 1919 Champion Demonstration Team for Sewing.
Donated by Hamlin County Extension agent (1919-24) A.W. Tompkins, this photo depicts a team event. This team took home the 1919 South Dakota State Fair “Champion Demonstration Team for Sewing.” The three young women competed to win this award by sewing pieces and explaining the process while doing so. Not only were they able to showcase their skills, but they were also able to teach others how to do the same. This team event ceases to continue, however, and, in the modern State Fair, there is not a sewing demonstration team class.
