Unpredictable South Dakota Weather

Two buildings are shown. One suffered broken windows from unpredictable weather while the other was lifted from the ground and leans against the other.
Buildings damaged severely by a tornado in Turner County.

The old adage, “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes,” rings true in South Dakota. Our weather changes minute to minute sometimes.

This week’s Throwback Thursday shows the devastation caused by one of the more violent acts of weather on the prairie: the tornado. On Sept. 13, 1928, Davis in Turner County survived a tornado. As seen in the postcard, significant damage occurred. One of the buildings had the first floor taken out, while the building next to it has most of the windows damaged, as well as the roof. The 1928 Davis tornado illustrates the sheer unpredictability of South Dakota weather.
