Registered Student Organizations (RSO)
Guidelines on use of university names and logos
The use of the university’s logos and names are strictly controlled. There are limitations on which logos and other marks are available for use by RSOs. Details on permissible and impermissible uses are below.
- As a general rule, the use of the primary SDState and Athletics logos by RSOs is not allowed except as set forth herein. Any use of SDState logos and wordmarks must adhere to the official approval process. Questions about the approval process for logo and name use should be directed to University Marketing and Communications.
- RSO categories and allowable logo usage are evaluated annually by UMC in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. These guidelines can be changed at any time to reflect updated branding and trademark licensing specifications. Use of SDState logos and wordmarks can be revoked at any time.
- SDState logos and wordmarks may not be used by an RSO in conjunction with: alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, illegal and recreational drugs and drug paraphernalia, gambling products, firearms or other weapons, profanity, sexual acts and sexually oriented goods, statements impugning other universities, racist, hateful, demeaning or degrading language or statements, national flags, political symbols, political issues and candidates, religious symbols or illegal activity. The list of prohibited items includes actual and/or implied usage.
- On all marketing materials advertising RSO and sports club events or services, the following statement must be included: "ÈÕ±¾avÊÓƵ is not a sponsor of this event. Registered student organizations have the ability to sponsor lawful events, which are governed by SDBOR Policies, University Policy, and SDCL 13-53-52." For more information, review the SDState Posting Policy.
