Healthspan Enhancement Through Activity and Lifestyle (HEAL) Lab

Research Focus

We are a multidisciplinary research group dedicated to improving health span (the years of life lived in good health with strength, mobility, and independence). Our work focuses on how nutrition, physical activity and targeted exercise interventions can protect against age-related loss of muscle and joint function.

Primary Areas of Focus

  • Sarcopenia: the decline in muscle mass, quality and strength with aging
  • Osteoarthritis: joint degeneration that limits mobility and quality of life
  • Health span biology: the metabolic, physiological and behavioral processes that support functional aging

Our Approach

We conduct research spanning community-based interventions, clinical trials and mechanistic studies. By examining how diet and exercise interact at the whole body, muscle and cellular levels, we aim to identify practical strategies that help older adults stay active and independent.

We bring together expertise in:

  • Exercise physiology
  • Nutrition science
  • Aging biology
  • Metabolic health
  • Musculoskeletal function

Our lab uses state-of-the-art methods, including body composition analysis, physical performance testing, physical activity monitoring and biomarker profiling, to understand how lifestyle choices impact aging trajectories.

Our Mission

Our mission is to add life to years, not just years to life.

We are committed to developing evidence-based, accessible interventions that support strength, mobility and independence as people age. By partnering with older adults, clinicians, community organizations and industry collaborators, we strive to create sustainable programs that can be used in real-world settings.

Why It Matters

Muscle loss and joint disease are among the leading causes of disability in the aging population. But these conditions are modifiable. Evidence shows that targeted nutrition and exercise strategies can delay or prevent functional decline. Our work seeks to transform that knowledge into practical solutions that help people maintain healthy, active and fulfilling lives.

Join Us

We welcome collaborations with students, researchers, clinicians, community partners and older adults who share our vision of extending healthy years of life. Together, we can push the science of aging forward and empower individuals to live stronger, longer.
