Academic Success for Veterans

Quality advising is integral to the overall success of SDState students, while supporting the unique needs of our military connected students. Minimum qualifications for our student success advisors: master鈥檚 degree in education or related field completed; at least one year of academic advising or related experience; experience working with a varied population of undergraduate college students in a student-centered environment; effective written and verbal communication skills; strong interpersonal skills.
Student Success Advisor: Connie Johnson, M.Ed.
Student success advisors are charged with improving the retention rate for a select group of students. This is accomplished by facilitating one-on-one consultations with students and by coordinating programs proven to positively affect student retention in higher education. The School Certifying Official (SCO) is a representative of an educational institute or training establishment who is authorized to submit enrollment certification to the Department of Veterans Affairs for Veterans Affairs education benefits.
What is a Student Success Advisor?
Student success advisors utilize current technology, including ConnectState as advising tool and Banner Student and follow university procedures to process early alerts.
- Collaborate with academic advisors regarding student progress and needs while incorporating proactive and appreciative advising models.
- Attend required trainings and monthly advisor meetings.
- Promote student growth and development through a holistic advising approach in which students receive support with course registration, academic performance, engagement and financial well-being.
- Engage students in career advising conversations.
Military Connected Student Success Advisor
- Assist students in assessing their interest and abilities, examining their educational goals, making decisions and developing short-term and long-term plans to meet objectives.
- Reinforce student engagement activities that lead to greater self-direction and self-sufficiency.
- Make students aware of and refer them to educational, institutional and community resources and services.
- Help students develop learning strategies or other skills to improve academic performance and information regarding using military education benefits.
Brookings is located off of Interstate 29, approximately 55 miles north of Sioux Falls. With a population of just over 22,000, Brookings is the fourth largest city in South Dakota. It is home to several large companies, including Daktronics, Bel Brands, Larson Manufacturing, 3M and Twin City Fan. The community offers a variety of attractions and entertainment. The Children's Museum of South Dakota provides a year-round interactive playground for kids to learn, while the Dakota Nature Park is home to several recreational activities throughout the year. Brookings is filled with plenty of and gathering places to bring friends together, including numerous museums and galleries.
