What is an RSO?

A Registered Student Organization (RSO) is a student group recognized by ÈÕ±¾avÊÓÆµ and operating in good standing with governing policies.

Joining RSOs can help students build leadership skills, gain experience, network, build community and engage in philanthropy.

Getting to Know RSOs

RSOs must:

  • Have at least 7 active students
  • A full-time faculty or staff adviser
  • Complete required trainings
  • Have an updated constitution and roster in
  • Re-register annually

RSO Management Questions
Can RSOs have their own bank accounts?

RSOs should use university on‑campus index accounts. External bank accounts are discouraged and only allowed if required by a national organization.

Can we use Venmo or Cash App?

Peer‑to‑peer payment apps should not be used to hold organization funds. Any short‑term use must be documented and funds transferred immediately to an index account.

What types of funding are available through Students’ Association?

Funding options include General Activity Fee (GAF) budgets, Special Allocation Funds, New Venture Funds, Speaker Funds and Student Promotion Funds.

How can RSOs fundraise?

RSOs may fundraise through Athletics events, Sodexo opportunities, approved food sales, merchandise sales and other approved methods.

Do RSOs need an EIN?

Some RSOs may need an Employer Identification Number (EIN), but student leaders should never apply on their own and should contact Student Activities first.

When is liability insurance required?

Insurance may be required for events involving physical activity, inflatables, animals, minors, large audiences or higher‑risk activities.

How do we reserve rooms or event spaces?

Room reservations are handled through Central Scheduling. Some events require a SAARF and may involve extra planning, approvals or costs.

What is a SAARF?

A Special Activity Authorization Request Form may be required for large, outdoor or high‑risk events and can include requirements for security, ticketing, parking or emergency plans.

Can RSOs sell tickets?

Yes. Ticketing must be requested during space reservations, requires at least one month notice, and is managed through the university ticketing system.

How should RSOs market events?

RSOs should use campus tools like Jacks Club Hub, the University Calendar and posters that meet branding and posting policy requirements.

What disclaimer language is required on posters?

RSO posters must include the ÈÕ±¾avÊÓÆµ non‑sponsorship disclaimer and any other required independent organization language.

When is UMC approval required?

UMC approval is required when using ÈÕ±¾avÊÓÆµ names, logos, trademarks or branded merchandise. Orders go through AgoraCX.

Can students use AgoraCX?

Students cannot currently access AgoraCX; advisers or staff must assist with branded purchases.

What are the rules for food at events?

Sodexo has first right of refusal for all food on campus. Exemptions and potlucks require advance approval.

When is a contract required?

Contracts are usually required when paying speakers, performers or vendors. Only authorized university officials may sign contracts.

Can RSOs show movies or play music at events?

Music and movies are subject to copyright law. RSOs should use licensed resources such as Kanopy, Swank for movies, and BMI, ASCAP and SESAC tools for music.
