�ձ�av��Ƶ’s School of Performing Arts advisor Sam Gowen has received the 2025 Marcus Boesen Memorial Award from the South Dakota Higher Education Association. 

Before coming to �ձ�av��Ƶ in 2023, Gowen was a freelance hornist and teacher, adjunct horn and music instructor, and held an administrative position in the Faculty Support Department at the Florida State University College of Law. 

According to the association’s website, the Marcus Boesen Memorial Award “distinguishes new professionals who have shown outstanding contributions to the overall development of students, to their educational institution and to the South Dakota Higher Education Association and/or to the higher education profession.” 

Described as “people-centered” and “marked by excellence” by her peers, Gowen embodies the award’s call in her professional and personal practices. 

Jessica Lewis, advising and retention coordinator for the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, said Gowen is a strong advocate for students and staff. 

“Sam takes time to show students and advisees that she cares, assists them in navigating the institution to access resources and draws in relevant team members to create a network of support,” Lewis explained. “I am grateful every day for the joy, humor and energy she brings to our college's advising group. She is a valued and trusted colleague.” 

Gowen said she was humbled and grateful to have received the award. 

“My position in the School of Performing Arts is absolutely a dream job,” Gowen said. “I love that I get the opportunity to work with students in so many different capacities in my position. Not only do I have the opportunity to support their college and career goals through advising, but I also get to teach every major that comes through our program in our first-year seminar … I even get to collaborate with our students and perform alongside them and my faculty colleagues in many of our Woodbine Productions, Prairie Repertory productions and other guest and special recitals as well.
