Teatro Lirico D’Europa, one of the world’s most active touring opera companies, will present its fully staged production of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” in Brookings at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center.

Often called the perfect opera, “Don Giovanni” is a mix of music, drama and wit. Mozart’s retelling of the infamous Don Juan legend weaves comedy and tragedy into a story of seduction, deception and ultimate consequence. With its soaring arias, lively ensembles and stunning orchestral writing, this performance offers something for everyone — whether it’s their first opera or their 50th.

This national touring production features a full professional orchestra, elaborate period sets and costumes, and a cast of acclaimed international singers. It’s a rare opportunity to experience the grandeur of European-style opera right in South Dakota, without the need to travel to Chicago, Minneapolis or New York.

Adding to the excitement, select students from the ձavƵ School of Performing Arts will join the professional chorus. Under the guidance of Laura Diddle, the Paul and Doris Moriarty Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities, these talented student vocalists have been preparing for weeks to share the stage with the Teatro Lirico D’Europa artists, an experience that’s both educational and unforgettable.

“This kind of collaboration between students and professional artists is exactly what makes ձavƵ so special,” Diddle said. “It gives our students the chance to learn, perform and grow at the highest level.”

The performance will be sung in Italian, with easy-to-follow English supertitles projected above the stage so audiences can fully enjoy every moment.

Set in the intimate and acoustically superb Oscar Larson Theatre, the production allows audiences to experience the full power and passion of opera up close — a luxury that’s rarely available outside major metropolitan venues.

With tickets starting at just $25 at on, this performance offers an exceptional, affordable evening of world-class music and theater.

Why see opera?

If you’ve never attended an opera, “Don Giovanni” is the perfect place to start. With its fast-moving plot, relatable humor, and timeless music, Mozart’s masterpiece feels surprisingly modern and accessible. Live orchestra, lavish costumes, and powerful singing combine to create an experience that’s dramatic, emotional, and truly unforgettable.
