About the Research and Scholarship Subcommittee
The College of Nursing research and scholarship subcommittee serves a variety of functions. Included in these functions is the approval of any research studies or projects that involve College of Nursing students as research participants.
Overview of Functions
- Advise the Office of Nursing Research on needs or activities to facilitate faculty research and scholarship.
- Facilitate peer review of research proposals submitted by faculty in response to intra/extramural notices of funding opportunities, make recommendations for strengthening proposals and facilitate peer review of any subsequent funding agency critique.
- Facilitate mentorship for faculty conducting research and scholarly activity in collaboration with the associate dean for research.
- Review research proposals submitted by faculty in response to the annual College of Nursing seed grant call for proposals and make recommendations for funding to the dean.
- Ensure College of Nursing representation on health system nursing research and evidence-based practice committees seeking collaborative opportunities.
- Represent the College of Nursing in health research initiatives within 日本av视频 as requested.
- Screen proposals that involve nursing students as human subjects to determine student burden and offer alternative student cohorts if available.
- Coordinate with the public relations and communications subcommittee to solicit nominations and select the recipient of the annual College of Nursing Researcher/Scholar of the Year award.
- Review and recommend student poster abstracts to the dean to represent the College of Nursing in all available student categories at the Midwest Nursing Research Society conference.
Approval Process for Students as Research Participants
Any research studies or projects that involve graduate or undergraduate College of Nursing students as subjects or research participants must be approved by the research and scholarship subcommittee prior to receiving approval from the university Institutional Review Board.
If your research proposal or project includes using College of Nursing graduate or undergraduate students, below are the steps needed before submitting to the research and scholarship subcommittee.
- Review Policy No. C1970: students as research participants before submitting proposals for review.
College of Nursing Policy No. C1970: Students as Research Participants
Purpose: To inform researchers of investigator responsibilities when students are recruited to participate in studies as research participants.
All research projects that include recruiting students as study participants shall be approved by the College of Nursing research and scholarship subcommittee and the university Institutional Review Board. Project proposals that include students as study participants must be submitted to the College of Nursing associate dean for research who will distribute the request to the research and scholarship subcommittee for review. Researchers can anticipate a response from the subcommittee approximately one month after submission to the associate dean for research.
- The principal investigator will submit the research proposal (may use drafted Institutional Review Board form) to the College of Nursing associate dean for research. The proposal must include background, methods (sample, design, statistical analysis and timeline), instruments, recruitment materials and informed consent documents.
- The research and scholarship subcommittee will review the proposal for student research activity burden for approval. Student participation in research is voluntary, and no course credit or waiving on any course assignments in exchange for study participation is permitted.

- Please discuss the feasibility of conducting the study with the faculty of record if the proposed study will be conducted within a specific course(s).
- The associate dean for research will provide written notice of approval, decline to approve with rationale, or pending approval with request for additional information, within one week after the scheduled subcommittee meeting in which the proposal was discussed.
- After approval of the proposal:
- The principal investigator must submit the proposal for human subjects consideration.

- If the principal investigator believes the study would fall under the Center for Professional Enrichment and Teaching Excellence umbrella Institutional Review Board for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, please see the Center for Professional Enrichment and Teaching Excellence website on the umbrella IRB.
- The principal investigator must submit the proposal for human subjects consideration.

Submit Your Abstract for the MNRS Student Poster Competition
Undergraduate and graduate students can submit an application for support in the student poster competition at the Midwest Nursing Research Society annual spring conference. To be considered, students should submit an abstract of their work to the research and scholarship subcommittee in one of the following categories:
- Research
- Evidence-based projects
- Evidence-based literature review
After review by the subcommittee, selected posters will be advanced for the competition. The deadline is in the early fall of each year. Abstracts submitted as research in progress or evidence-based practice in progress must be completed by the time of the conference.
