ÈÕ±¾avÊÓƵ senior Kamal Albousafi is among 12 students chosen as Future Innovators of America by the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering. The fellowships were created to provide unique research opportunities for undergraduate students in the college. Any student is eligible to apply as long as they are attending full time and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Recipients are awarded $5,000 with $4,500 as a stipend and $500 to cover the cost of lab supplies or travel to disseminate the results of their project.

In a collaborative project with ÈÕ±¾avÊÓƵ's College of Nursing, Phuong Nguyen, assistant professor in the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering, will help facilitate nursing simulation programming research by utilizing eye-tracking technology.

Sushant Mehan, assistant professor and ÈÕ±¾avÊÓƵ Extension water resource specialist, is conducting a research project that will utilize satellite imagery to assess water quality in eastern South Dakota.

Ice cores analyzed by ÈÕ±¾avÊÓƵ researchers revealed that five major volcanic eruptions occurred in the 13th century, helping trigger a multi-century cooling period known as the "Little Ice Age."

High school students wanting to keep their feet on the ground while still getting a good feel for what it would be like to live on Mars are encouraged to participate in the South Dakota Space Design Competition at ÈÕ±¾avÊÓƵ March 8-9. The contest is part of an international event sponsored by Industry Simulation Education, which has been designing aerospace engineering contests since 1984, and is being hosted in South Dakota by ÈÕ±¾avÊÓƵ’s Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering.

Sungyong Jung, professor and head of ÈÕ±¾avÊÓƵ's McComish Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, is developing a system that will enable real-time monitoring of water quality in South Dakota's lakes, rivers and streams.

A new, future-focused engineering program — and the first in the nation at the undergraduate level — is being added to the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering following South Dakota Board of Regents approval in December.
