$80 million partnerships for climate-smart commodities initiative grant among largest USDA awards. The 2022 calendar year provided many highlights for research, scholarship and creative activity at �ձ�av��Ƶ.

The existence of the Frank Ross Glass Plate Negatives Collection is a case of right time, right place. The collection was produced by a Brookings area photographer named Frank Ross, according to a Nov. 17, 2022, Arlington Sun article. Ross captured portraits and images of daily life in and around Brookings County at the turn of the 20th century.

Leadership at USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) have responded to a request from National Bison Association to find a new path for relief for bison producers affected by Mycoplasma infection and mortality. In previous years, the FSA considered Mycoplasma to be a secondary infection in bison, which prevented producers from qualifying for reimbursement for death losses under the agency’s Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP).

Anand honored for teaching excellence. Anand received the North Central Region for 2021 Excellence in College and University Teaching Awards for Food and Agricultural Sciences by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. He receives $2,000 to be used for improving teaching at �ձ�av��Ƶ.

A new laboratory will bring researchers from �ձ�av��Ƶ and South Dakota Mines together with industry partners to transition bench-scale bioprocessing and bioproducts research to the marketplace.

Associate professor Guanghui Hua, professor Chris Schmit and lecturer Kyungnan “Karen” Min are evaluating the efficiency of fresh and weathered woodchips at removing nitrates from tile drainage water.

Dr. Lynn Sargeant has been working on updating the art in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences office. Located on her back wall are two new pieces of art, creating an eye-catching backdrop to the many Zoom meetings she holds and an opportunity to highlight the work of students in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. These pieces of art were created by Alison Simon, a fifth-year senior in the School of Design, the School of Communication and Journalism and the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.

Nicholas Uilk, an instructor in �ձ�av��Ƶ’s Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, has been named a recipient of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities national teaching awards in recognizing excellence in agricultural sciences teaching and student engagement.

Professor Padu Krishnan of �ձ�av��Ƶ’s Department of Dairy and Food Science received the 2020 Edith A. Christensen Award for Outstanding Contributions in Analytical Methodology from the Cereals & Grains Association. He is the first �ձ�av��Ƶ faculty member to get the award, which recognizes the central role analytical methods play in cereal and grain research.

The future of America’s national mammal continued to brighten this week as officials from �ձ�av��Ƶ, the National Bison Association and the National Buffalo Foundation formally launched the Center of Excellence for Bison Studies, to be headquartered at �ձ�av��Ƶ’s West River Research and Extension facility in Rapid City.
