Graduate Alumni on the Move: Jared Wollman
Originally from Hartford, South Dakota, Jared Wollman is a proud double Jackrabbits alum, earning his B.S. in microbiology in spring 2018 and his M.S. in biological sciences with a biology specialization in fall 2020 from ձavƵ. Today, Wollman lives on the west side of Sioux Falls with his wife and young daughter, embracing both family life and a rewarding scientific career.
Since graduating, Wollman has been working at Sanford Research in the Flow Cytometry Core, where he supports a wide range of research projects. With a multitude of projects, there is never a shortage of things to do and learn. “I am happy with how adaptable I have been since graduating,” Wollman shared. “It’s probably the best way that ձavƵ prepared me for my role today.”
His graduate research focused on CRISPR/Cas9 whole genome screens to study macrophage micropinocytosis, a project that taught him to think broadly across biological systems. That same curiosity now fuels his work at Sanford, where he helps researchers across disciplines answer complex questions. “I specialize in flow cytometry, but I also get to learn a little bit about what everyone else is doing. Getting to help other researchers answer their questions is very meaningful to me.”
Outside the lab, his world revolves around his family. “Life is super busy right now with a toddler at home,” he said with a laugh. “We love to see animals, look at Christmas decorations and spend quiet nights at home after my daughter goes to bed. When I get time, I enjoy board games, video games and audiobooks.”
His advice for those considering graduate school? “Be open to many different job opportunities. I didn’t even know my current job existed until near the end of graduate school, and it’s been a perfect fit. Staying open-minded can lead you to something you didn’t expect but end up loving.”
